A Field Guide to Recent Work on the Foundations of Statistical Mechanics

چکیده
Statistical mechanics (SM) is the study of the connection between micro-physics and macro-physics. 1 Thermodynamics (TD) correctly describes a large class of phenomena we observe in macroscopic systems. The aim of statistical mechanics is to account for this behaviour in terms of the dynamical laws governing the microscopic constituents of macroscopic systems and probabilistic assumptions. 2 This project can be divided into two sub-projects, equilibrium SM and non-equilibrium SM. This distinction is best illustrated with an example. Consider a gas initially confined to the left half of a box (see fig. 3.1): Fig. 3.1. Initial state of a gas, wholly confined to the left compartment of a box separated by a barrier This gas is in equilibrium as all natural processes of change have come to an end and the observable state of the system is constant in time, meaning that all macroscopic parameters such as local temperature and local pressure assume constant values. Now we remove the barrier separating the two halves of the box. As a result, the gas is no longer in equilibrium and it quickly disperses (see fig. 3.2): This process of dispersion continues until the gas homogeneously fills the entire box, at which point the system will have reached a new equilibrium state (see fig. 3.3):

Analysis of Nonlinear Vibrations of Slightly Curved Tripled-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Resting on Elastic Foundations in a Magneto-Thermal Environment
In this work, nonlocal elasticity theory is applied to analyze nonlinear free vibrations of slightly curved multi-walled carbon nanotubes resting on nonlinear Winkler and Pasternak foundations in a thermal and magnetic environment. With the aid of Galerkin decomposition method, the systems of nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into systems of nonlinear ordinary differentia...
متن کاملThermoelastic response of microbeams under a magnetic field rested on two-parameter viscoelastic foundation
Mechanical foundations and pavements design need a perfect prediction of the response of the material to reach a reliable and safe structure. This work deals with the thermoelastic response of microbeams rested on a two-parameter viscoelastic foundation due to a magnetic field in the context of the dual - phase lag thermoelasticity model. The solutions of the governing equations are attained us...
متن کاملBending of Shear Deformable Plates Resting on Winkler Foundations According to Trigonometric Plate Theory
A trigonometric plate theory is assessed for the static bending analysis of plates resting on Winkler elastic foundation. The theory considers the effects of transverse shear and normal strains. The theory accounts for realistic variation of the transverse shear stress through the thickness and satisfies the traction free conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shea...

Dynamic behaviour of nonlinear free vibration of circular plate resting on two-parameters foundation is studied. The governing ordinary differential equation is solved analytically using hybrid Laplace Adomian decomposition method. The analytical solutions obtained are verified with existing results in literature. The analytical solutions are used to determine the influence of elastic fou...
